Small rodents (primarily mice and rats) represent the primary species used in research. Their short life span, proclivity for reproduction, known genetic background, and minimal expense for purchase and maintenance has made them a desirable animal model.

Rabbits are highly desirable for studies that require larger animal and also an inbred strain. It is probably the largest laboratory species in which inbred strains are commonly available, and is often chosen for genetic studies.

The pre-clinical unit of Assaf Harofeh Medical Center has both the facility and expertise with rodents (mice, rats, guinea pigs) in various disciplines, such as Orthopedics, Cardiovascular Surgery, Ophthalmology, Oncology Research, Nephrology, PK, PD, Transdermal Drug Delivery, Dermatology, Cell Press Chamber treatment and so forth.
